|A chance to enjoy the very first of 40 issues of SPLOSH! that made its debut in 1989. Although it has a black and white cover, like all editions the magazine has an eight-page colour photo story. `Her First Lesson` stars (early Madonna-lookalike) Mirrel and Zeta in full length evening dresses and right from the start uses huge quantities of real food including eggs, beans, soup, spaghetti custard and cream. Other features in this rather wordy first edition are an illustrated feature on Tiswas, a beginners` guide to mudlarking, readers letters of encouragement, news and a review of the first ever WAM video, `The Hopeful Starlet` from WSM (still available from us on DVD). |
Although 20-years-old the first edition has many features that lasted through its run. The humour was there as was Hayley (although she was merely helping doing the admin in those days under the rather posher name of Haidee). Being long before computers, every headline was done by Letraset transfer and the layout pasted down in columns in Bill Shipton`s spare bedroom. The drips on the logo were drawn by hand!.
The centre section was photographed by (the now sadly late) Colin Twyford and shot in his own hotel kitchen in Tenby, South Wales, Mirrel and Zeta being two local sisters who had never modelled before. There is no nudity in the set (the only issue without any) as Bill Shipton the editor and originator wanted to see how much of the appeal was the mess rather than glamour. By issue 2 everyone was saying they would like some nudity but the mess was exactly right!
Only 500 copies of SPLOSH! No 1 have ever been printed, all of which have now been sold (and many probably destroyed!). Others have been sold for up to £75. Long before the internet, this was the magazine that started bringing people together to discuss `wet and messy fun` (as it was then called) so it is a real piece of WAM history.
